BJJ academy rules & mat etiquette

  1. No shoes on the mat;
  2. White, Blue or Black Gi only, no partisan patches;
  3. All metal objects, jewellery, piercings, necklaces and other such items should be removed before entering the mat;
  4. Hygiene is essential:
      -  Hands and feet should be clean;
      -  Finger and toenails shall be free from dirt and neatly clipped;
      -  Long hair should be tied to where it will not interfere with training.
      -  If you bleed during training, stop training, stop the bleed, clean yourself and the mat before you restart;
  5. No food, drinks or phones are permitted on the mat;
  6. No swearing or shouting inside the Academy;
  7. A full, clean, Kimono/Gi with appropriate belt must be worn at all times on the mat;
  8. No gi, no restrictions on uniform;
  9. Instructor should be referred to as "coach", all black belts as “Professor”;
  10. Bow when you enter and exit the mat;
  11. All students line up at start and end of each class in belt order left to right;
  12. If you arrive late for a class wait for the instructor to invite you onto the mat;
  13. If you need to leave the mat for any reason, let the instructor know;
  14. Do not walk outside or in the bathroom with bare feet. You must wear sandals or shoes;
  15. When rolling give way to senior belts;
  16. Agree with partner before sparring on all leg locks, legal or non competition;
  17. Children not participating in class should be under the supervision of a parent/guardian at all times.
  18. If you don’t recognize someone on the mat, please introduce yourself. We are all friends here!
